One look at that base and you know there was (to start with) a lot more blade--An Adena knapper would never make a base that large unless there was a corresponding large flint blade above it--sharpened down with use, the entire knife now measures 2&5/8" by 1&7/16"--with a 3/8" max thickness, the thickest part being nearer the tip. When the upper blade holds the thickest measurement it's a simple jump to knowing the blade was considerably larger. Made of a weathered grade of Indiana Hornstone, the piece shows almost a creek find-type patina. Because the piece came with some Perry County, Indiana, Adenas (my old hunting grounds), I know the form, the material, and can guarantee the authenticity. The one snapped-off barb is an ancient chip, and an impact fracture to the edge right above the missing barb indicates the piece was in use after that barb was broken--price reflects the ancient damage. For the work it took, the Woodland Culture hunter made a very sharp tip to a blade that was both shortened and narrowed--almost a 'burin' the tip is so sharp.
