Rummaging through a case of points found 'somewhere' along Panther Creek, Daviess County, Kentucky, a Contracted Base style point from the Big Sandy Early Archaic period--the first thing you notice--and why I stashed the piece away fifteen years back--is that the tip shows heavy, heavy fire pops--what even kept the point from shattering is something I found interesting. The tip isn't broken, it was salvaged in a twist--that's not to say it's sharp pointed, there may be one 'last use' tiny chip off the very tip of the point. The flint is hornstone, but the heat (campfire damage) altered the color to something you hardly recognize "as hornstone" (Indiana Hornstone)--2&1/16" by 15/16", and 5/16" max thickness. The basal edge shows both the 'contracted base form", and heavy basal edge grinding. In a fashion the base almost looks "Thebes-ish" if that makes sense, but the blade edges are not beveled in the way a Thebes point would have been sharpened--Big Sandy knappers had their own technique, it's more quadra-facial.
