The piece is from the Indian Hill Museum collection of Norman Reid, an axe I put in my collection since the collection was sold in the estate sale--nice axe, better made 3/4 groove than I ever found, but then Mr. Reid was surface hunting plowed (actually plowed) fields back in the early 1950s. He didn't mark tis one but the majority of the finds he made were Edwards County, Illinois. Made of a dense granite, 5&7/16" by 3&3/16". On the front 'ring' my caliper reads 2&5/16". The heel shows the shape of the starting Wabash River cobble--there wasn't quite enough stone there to fashion a rear groove ridge--not a break, simply a sculptor who ran out of stone Also on the heel is a splotch of green paint--your guess is as good as mine as to what that's doing there. The surface shows a couple light plow scratches and then that bit ding--looks like a farm plow barely caught the bit, it flaked-away a small spot.
